Nokto

A quick scratchpad that opens from a hotkey, works fully offline, and syncs end-to-end encrypted between your computers. This server only ever stores encrypted data.

What's new

Nokto for Mac, Windows, and Linux. Offline editing, live Markdown preview, encrypted sync, search, pinned notes, Trash, export, and desktop shortcuts.

Install

macOS

Nokto isn't notarized by Apple yet, so macOS asks you to approve it once.

  1. Open the .dmg and drag Nokto into Applications.
  2. Open Nokto. When macOS says it can't verify the developer, click Done.
  3. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security, scroll down, and click Open Anyway next to Nokto. Confirm with your password.

Windows

The installer isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen may warn you.

  1. Run the downloaded setup .exe.
  2. If you see Windows protected your PC, click More info, then Run anyway.

Linux

The AppImage updates itself. The .deb is updated by downloading a newer .deb.

  • AppImage: make it executable, then run it.
    chmod +x linux-*.AppImage
./linux-*.AppImage
  • Debian or Ubuntu: install the package with apt.
    sudo apt install ./linux-*.deb
  • On GNOME, approve the keyboard shortcut once when the system dialog asks.

Add your computers

First computer

  1. Choose Create a new Sync Key.
  2. Copy the key into your password manager before you continue.

Every other computer

  1. Choose Enter an existing Sync Key and paste the same key.
  2. Your notes arrive in the background. You can start writing right away, even offline.
  3. You can show and copy the key again any time in Settings › Sync Key.

Anyone with your Sync Key can read every note. If you lose the key and every computer with Nokto, your notes can't be recovered. Use Settings › Export all notes for a backup that doesn't need the key.
